Doctor says comments from bald-headed “Mad Money” host reflect common misconceptions about modern hair transplant methods
CRANSTON, RI -Jim Cramer may know money, but the CNBC star is out of date when it comes to giving advice on hair transplants, said Dr. Robert Leonard, one of the country’s best known hair restoration experts.
“Mr. Cramer’s comparison of hair transplants to ‘cornrows’ is a reference to the long-extinct hair plug method,” Leonard said. “He’s talking about a procedure that hasn’t been performed in at least 15 years.”
Cramer’s quotes appeared in the New York Post’s Page Six column, which reported that the balding host of “Mad Money” bristled when asked if he’s ever considered a hairpiece. Cramer described hairpieces as “phony,” adding “the same with hair transplants.” Cramer said he would remain bald because “all I have is my authenticity.”
“Authenticity is the hallmark of hair transplantation,” said Leonard. He added that no media celebrity is more authentic than New England sports talk radio personality Mike Adams of WEEI. Adams, a patient of Leonard’s, said that today’s hair transplants do not compare to hair pieces or any other system.
“It’s real, it’s my own hair, and it’s permanent,” said Adams. He cannot spot a transplant on other people in sports or media, even though he is very familiar with the procedure. “They’re undetectable,” he said.
“That’s because refinements in the procedures create a natural look,” Leonard said. “While people still incorrectly associate hair transplants with the plugs of a generation ago, they see people with hair transplants every day and don’t realize it. Unfortunately, the field of hair restoration is still suffering from an inaccurate and outdated perception.”
If Cramer refrains from commenting on hair restoration, Leonard quipped, he in turn will not give investment advice.
